94th ESFRI Forum: Key outcomes

The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) held its 94th virtual meeting on December 11th and 12th, 2025, online.

ESFRI Roadmap 2026

Ms. Gelsomina Pappalardo, ESFRI Vice Chair and Chair of the Roadmap group working on the Roadmap 2026, presented to the delegates and update on progresses and further actions. Monitoring of 2018 and 2021 projects was successfully concluded according to schedule. Evaluation of new proposals for the Roadmap 2026 is currently ongoing. Next in the pipeline are the hearings where new proposals will be asked to answer critical questions and provide clarifications. Importantly, the ESFRI Roadmap 2026 will also include the update of the ESFRI RIs portfolio.

New Chair of the ESFRI Strategic Working Group Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH)

The Forum approved the appointment of Ms. Matija Strlic as the new Chair of the ESFRI Strategic Working Group Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH). Ms Strlic started her mandate on the 1st of January 2026 and will end on the 31st of December 2026.

European Strategy on Research and Technology Infrastructures

The ESFRI Forum discussed the recent European Strategy on Research and Technology Infrastructures with particular emphasis on the role of ESFRI in the European Strategy on RTI (namely the bloc of actions from the European Commission: capacities & investment, digitalization & AI, accessibility, attracting & growing talent, governance framework, and international dimension & resilience). The ESFRI Chair mentioned the importance of being sensitive to the issues that the latest developments in the ecosystem are bringing to the infrastructure landscape.

Setting up priority actions for ESFRI

Following the process that started with the ESFRI’s White Paper and continued in the “Future of ESFRI” workshop The Forum discussed a non-exhaustive list of actions, short and long-term, serving two main, related goals:

  • Maintain and further strengthen the strategic role of ESFRI
  • Optimize and maximize the impact of the ESFRI activities

With 25 years of accumulated expertise, ESFRI must ensure this knowledge contributes to put coherence and efficiency in the infrastructure’s ecosystem. Its proved track of uniting very diverse infrastructures under one umbrella through the establishment of groundbreaking methodologies is a strength that should be leveraged.

Preparations for the 4th esfri Stakeholder Forum Meetup

The Forum was informed on the first steps towards planning the 4th ESFRI Stakeholder Forum meetup, scheduled for September 2026, during Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Then the floor was opened for comments.
