Dr. Michael Ryan is Divisional Head of International at Science Foundation Ireland. Prior to this he coordinated the Foundation’s European and EU Framework Programme activities as well as having responsibility for a diverse portfolio of awards representing a total investment of €150 million. Michael is Executive Board Member to the European Strategy Forum to Research Infrastructures, ESFRI. He was chair of Science Europe’s Research Infrastructures & International Research Organisation (IRO) Committee and vice-chair of the Project Implementation working group for the ESFRI. He has sat on several international review committees of IROs and is also a member of the national High-Level Group for Government for EU Framework Programming. During his time in the private sector he established manufacturing facilities in Asia (Taiwan) and the US for an optoelectronics developer. Michael graduated from University College Dublin with a PhD in Physical and Analytical Chemistry. He holds various publications and patents for his work on the development of nanostructured films. He is currently responsible for the implementation of Science Foundation Ireland’s international strategy including the Foundation’s EU & Global operational activities. He was chair of Science Foundation Ireland‘s committee for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion from 2021 to 2024.
